First / Previous / Next / Last June 24 2001 Distance Traveled: 6.5 (+.4 extra) Total Miles: 6.5 (6.9) Location: Wesser Bald. Entry: Woke up at 0500 local time even though I wanted to sleep until 0745. I think it was a combination of Army life and not much activity yesterday besides driving. Hacksaw was right on time and was a great conversationalist as well as a trail angel. I highly recommend using him as a shuttle service if you need one. He does it for the love of hiking and gas money (gas ain't free). We stopped en-route for a good breakfast (you should feed him too) then on to Wesser. He dropped me off after ensuring I had his home and work numbers in case of emergency and I needed to get off the trail.
After leaving a message for Kristi on the answering machine, I trudged up the trail. I saw a few weekend hikers and a couple of longer distance section hikers, even one with a dog carrying a dog pack. I took a self portrait at Jump-Up which is a cool rock outcropping looking back north to Fontanna - hope the picture comes out. I stopped for a late lunch at Wesser Bald Shelter and left an entry in the register there. I also read an entry about a hiker using a rubber snake to scare off rodents - a good idea if it works, but it would seem that unless the fake snake actually smelled like a snake, mice might ignore it.
While at the shelter, I kept thinking I heard voices. Once I went up the trail to get some water and I ran into two teenaged girls. They informed me a group was staying at Wesser Bald, a church group of about 15 teenagers - mostly girls. I immediately planned on moving thru instead of staying. But they were so nice I decided to stay and dine with them. They asked tons of questions and it was so fun talking with them. I enjoyed every conversation. BTW, Wesser Bald is about 25 meters x 50 meters, not much of a bald. The tower up there is nice. Unfortunately because of the teenage girls, I didn't get to nude sunbathe.
